A new system for the detection of bacterial spoilage in aseptically packaged foods uses technology employed in MRI scanning and NMR spectroscopy. The system developed by Intermagnetics in collaboration with Ross Products Div. of Abbott Labs claims to detect bacterial spoilage in aseptically packaged milk-like foods -- on-line, automatically and with 100 percent accuracy. The company cites several advantages over existing systems:
  • Non-contact, providing the ability to analyze finished product already in secondary packaging.
  • Sensitive to many types of food contamination including (E. coli and Staph.).
  • Analyses performed at production rates.
  • Bulk inspection is possible.
