Food producers expressed strong disappointment when Congress adjourned without completing work on the new Farm Bill. House Speaker John Boehner says Congress will take up the measure after the November election. Dairy producers, in particular, say they’ve lost an important safety net.

“Dairy is among the first sectors in agriculture to feel the impact of Congress’s inability to reach accord on most anything, including a new Farm Bill,” says Jerry Kozak, president and CEO of the National Milk Producers Federation. “Had the House leadership brought the bipartisan Farm Bill to the floor, I believe we could have passed a bill containing the Dairy Security Act.”

Kozak says dairy farmers continue to suffer from high feed costs which would have been addressed in the Farm Bill.
