CSPI urges FDA to set safe soft drink high fructose syrup and sugar levels

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has asked FDA to determine safe levels for high fructose syrup and sugar levels for soft drinks, saying unsafe levels lead to diabetes, obesity, heart disease and other problems. CSPI says a typical 20-ounce soda’s 16 teaspoons of sugar is more than twice the daily limit recommended by the American Heart Association.

However, J. Patrick Mohan of the Corn Refiners Association urged caution, saying, “As we continue to debate the root causes of our nation’s obesity issue, we need to rely on science and facts, not look for quick fixes that draw focus away from developing real solutions to a complex problem.”
