Fair World Project, part of the Organic Consumers Association, says proposed changes to Fair Trade USA’s labeling policy would undermine fair trade farmers, consumers and committed brands. The changes would allow the Fair Trade USA logo to be used on products with only some fair trade ingredients, which would be listed beneath the seal. Fair World Project says the changes were made to accommodate Hershey’s, who tapped the certifying group to help implement the company’s sustainability plan. Fair Trade USA will require a threshold of only 20 percent fair trade ingredients for a product to display its seal, which the Fair World Project says falls far short of the industry standard 50 percent.
