CFSAN partners with university researchers to study shell egg safety

FDA has issued draft guidance to help producers who allow laying hens to have outdoor access comply with the requirements of the new Egg Safety Rule aimed at preventing Salmonella in shell eggs. The agency visited a number of farms to observe a range of laying operations, with variations in poultry house design and field condition. The guidance offers suggestions for preventing wild birds, rodents and other wildlife from entering outdoor access areas, advice on conducting environmental sampling for Salmonella and considerations when vaccinating laying hens. FDA is currently welcoming comment on the guidance, which is available here.
