Plant Openings

Expected to be complete this summer, H.T. Hackney Co.’s new 158,000-sq-ft. distribution center in Milton, FL, will supply a variety of products from dairy to snack items.

Blount Fine Foods of Fall River, MA, expects to double the size of its plant and add 100 employees when it completes its new 65,000-sq.-ft. expansion project later this year. Founded as an oyster house in 1880, the company manufactures refrigerated seafood. The expansion is expected to cost about $13 million.

Begun last July, Shearer’s Foods’ Massillon, OH, production facility phase 1 is now in the commissioning stage and should be complete by the end of April. The almost-64,000-sq.-ft. facility is expected to achieve LEED Gold certification and will include production of several varieties of tortilla chips. The facility is expected to use about 20% less energy per pound of product than the existing production lines.

Kraft Foods is investing $40 million in its Frederick County, VA, facility to expand production of Capri Sun beverages. The expansion is expected to create about 100 jobs.

Frito-Lay plans a $53 million expansion of its Topeka, KS, plant, which has already seen three expansions in as many years. The latest addition includes a high-rise addition to house a 70-ft. automated storage and retrieval system.
