IDFA supports threshold levels for food allergens

(IDFA) filed comments with FDA supporting the agency’s efforts to set food allergen threshold levels. IDFA called for an explanation of how those levels would be assessed and enforced, and called for FDA to review the list of tree nuts listed as major allergens and remove those with no history of reaction or only mild reactions. According to the comments, establishing such levels would “help focus labeling and enforcement on foods that contain levels of allergenic proteins that could cause allergic reactions, rather than labeling ingredients that may or may not be a health concern.” IDFA intends to submit further comments with the Grocery Manufacturers Association and other groups before the May 13 deadline.
