IFT report may aid in resolving foodborne illness outbreaks

April 9, 2013

A report to the Food and Drug Administration may help regulators resolve foodborne illness outbreaks earlier and enable the food industry to respond to them more quickly. The Institute of Food Technologists issued the report on two of its pilot projects designed to test and study various product tracing practices for fresh produce and processed foods. Based on eight case studies of previous outbreaks, the report suggests improved product tracing has the potential to reduce the public health impact by up to 55 percent of total illnesses and the economic impact by up to $14 million per outbreak.
