Architecture helps plants bid farewell to islands of automation

The 2,000 attendees at the Invensys Showcase Conference and Expo held last month in Orlando got the first look at ArchestrA, the company’s new comprehensive plant automation and information architecture that extends the life of legacy systems by leveraging the latest software technologies.

Offerings built on this architecture enable manufacturers to achieve business goals without abandoning prior investments in automation systems, production processes or intellectual property. In the ArchestrA environment, software applications can be assembled rather than programmed and new applications can also be created through the reassembly of existing applications. ArchestrA’s approach to industrial architecture reduces a plant’s total cost of ownership through easy installation, operation, modification, maintenance and replication of automation applications, according to Invensys.

With this announcement Invensys hopes to provide a unified and robust architecture that is the basis for collaborative production systems in support of industrial enterprises. ArchestrA’s open-development platform and tools enable Invensys and third parties such as OEMs, machine builders and system integrators to build domain knowledge and add value to the solutions they provide.

Invensys also introduced extensions to its I/A Series system platform. The I/A Series A² incorporates new operating systems and workstations, new high-speed communications and Architecture by ArchestrA. A new Intelligent Automation Configuration Component combines all A/I Series configuration tools—system configuration, control configuration and operator display configuration—into a common, integrated environment with advanced drag and drop configuration.
