Consumers turn to the Internet for food safety information

Americans want to take control of food safety in their homes, according to a new survey by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) and ConAgra Foods. While more people are aware of home food safety, increased knowledge still needs to be translated into fast action, the research shows. Here are some of the findings:
  • 27% of Americans now visit the Internet for food safety information, an 11% increase from 1999.
  • After handling raw meat, raw chicken or raw fish, more men are washing food preparation surfaces with soap and water/soap and bleach, nearly a 10% increase from 1999.
  • Of those who say they know the proper temperature to cook ground beef, nearly 80% correctly state a temperature of at least 160°F.
  • Nearly all consumers (97%) agree that the home food preparer plays the most important role in food safety.
