Self-venting microwavable trays speed cooking

As food processors offer more healthy fare, Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., Inc., Coral Gables, FL, introduced its line of microwavable vegetables as a convenient way to serve steamed vegetables. The vegetables are packed in 5-oz. and 6-oz. single-serving trays as well as a 12-oz. family-size microwavable tray from Cryovac Food Packaging, Duncan, SC, that allows the vegetables to be steam cooked.

Del Monte employs the Simple Steps vacuum skin package from Cryovac for its microwavable veggies. According to Cryovac, the package incorporates a highly permeable material that provides extended shelf life for perishable products such as broccoli, cauliflower and asparagus. The pack's vacuum skin format also conforms to the contours of the product, helping to improve the product's presentation and merchandising appeal.

Consumers place the tray in a microwave. Once the tray is heated, the film expands to form a bubble and then self vents and relaxes over the food. Consumers use the easy-open tab to peel off the film and serve. The tray also features "Stay Cool" side handles to reduce burns or spills.

Del Monte's microwavable vegetables are available in three varieties including baby carrots, vegetable medley (carrots, broccoli and cauliflower) and mixed vegetable (carrots, cauliflower and sugar peas).

According to Del Monte, the microwavable vegetable line is currently being sold through various retailers in the Midwest, with a national expansion planned throughout 2006.
