Are Food Grade Lubricants Part of Your HACCP Plan?

Machinery lubrication should be considered when developing an HACCP plan in food processing facilities. When developing the plan, some lubrication points can be overlooked. While applications such as hydraulic systems, gear boxes, greased bearings are usually quickly identified as those requiring a food grade lubricant, there may be areas that are less obvious. An example is plant air compressor lubrication. Air compressors are usually located away from food processing areas, but the compressed air provided can be piped throughout the facility and may be used in ways that could affect the food product. Storage and application methods can also impact food grade lubricant effectiveness and should be an integral part of a proper lubrication program.

Bullet Points:

  • Industry requirements for food grade lubricants.
  • Considerations for choosing a food grade lubricant.
  • Recommended guidelines for food grade lubricant monitoring.
  • Best practices for food grade lubricant storage and handling.
