Study: Consumers choose food and beverage products based on total sugar, not sweetener type
No more than five percent of consumers say they seek to avoid a specific sweetener.

New research from Mintel on behalf of the Corn Refiners Association found consumers seek to avoid high levels of total sugar rather than any specific type of sweetener. A survey found around a quarter of all soda, bread and yogurt buyers say they want to reduce total sugars in the diet, but only between one and five percent say they want to avoid a specific sweetener like high fructose corn syrup. Mintel says the findings align with previous research from recent years.
