Type 2 diabetes may be mitigated by big breakfasts

According to research published in the journal Obesity, a large breakfast rich in protein and fat can help overweight or obese individuals with type 2 diabetes regulate glycemic levels.

In the experiment, a group eating a breakfast rich in fat and protein comprising 33 percent of daily energy intake showed greater reductions in blood glucose level and systolic blood pressure than a group eating a breakfast rich in carbohydrates comprising only 12.5 percent of total energy. Body weight was reduced similarly in both groups. Type 2 diabetes medication was reduced in a greater proportion of big breakfast participants and fasting glucose was improved, while a greater proportion of small breakfast group participants had increased their medication dose.
