NIST releases voluntary National Cybersecurity Framework

The voluntary framework was compiled at the direction of the Obama administration.

February 26, 2014

The National Institutes of Standards and Technology released the National Cybersecurity Framework on February 12, one year after Executive Order 13636 directed it to compile a “voluntary framework based on existing standards, guidelines and practices to manage cybersecurity-related risk.”

According to the results of a recent Defense News poll, US national security leaders see cyberwarfare as a bigger threat to the US than terrorism.

The framework, available here (.pdf) was developed with contributions from more than 3,000 stakeholder individuals and organizations. It offers a standard set of questions for company executives and security professionals to ask when assessing their own, their customers’ and their partners’ cybersecurity.
