FSISThe Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is proposing a new rule that will allow food manufacturers to label a broader range of products without first submitting the label to FSIS for approval. Under the proposal, FSIS would continue to verify labels are accurate, not misleading, and in compliance with all labeling features.

The government says it is proposing the rule because it would get new products into the marketplace sooner while still ensuring they are not misbranded. FSIS says the streamlined label approval process would be more convenient and cost-effective for the food industry, especially smaller producers.
