Protecting the food supply may often seem like a daunting task. Our goal is to provide you with as many solutions as possible.

You may have noticed some patterns in Food Engineering’s (FE) coverage of the food and beverage manufacturing industry over the years. FE staff editors research and produce a number of signature feature articles each year, such as the State of Food Manufacturing, Plant Construction Survey, Plant of the Year and Fabulous Food Plant series.

Recently, we have added some new compositions to our repertoire. One is the Sustainable Plant of the Year article, and the other is the edition you are holding. The March issue of Food Engineering has become the yearly update on one of the most important challenges facing our industry: the state of food safety.

This month you will find a collection of staff-written articles on manufacturing mandates to keep the supply chain safe, techniques for sanitary equipment design and methods to keep pests out of your plant and products. We have also enlarged our Food Safety department with a new section that spotlights testing and quality assurance technologies.

You may not be aware that Food Engineering offers expanded coverage of food safety topics in its semi-monthly e-newsletter, Tech Flash. For example, the February 26, 2010 edition of Tech Flash includes stories on how high pressure processing enhances product safety and Cargill’s use of third-party video technology to monitor in-plant food safety practices. To view these food safety reports, visit www.foodengineeringmag.com. To subscribe to FE’s Tech Flash E-News, click on the “e-Newsletter” link in the upper left-hand column on our home page.

Protecting the food supply may often seem like a daunting task as new outbreaks occur and requirement standards evolve, but FE’s goal is to provide you with as many techniques as possible to tackle food safety challenges via our printed magazine pages, in digital e-newsletter formats and at yearly conferences and strategic events.

We hope all of our readers will continue to turn to Food Engineering’s multiple information sources for the latest updates on food safety.
