Sara Lee Coffee & Tea Co.is expanding their Suffolk, Va., plant through the additional of a $93 million concentrated liquid coffee production line. This capital investment represents the largest ever undertaken by the company and the product and unit will be the first of their kind in the United States. Plans call for the construction of a 152,000-sq.ft. building and the installation of proprietary processing and packaging equipment to produce a frozen liquid concentrate coffee that keeps up to 21 hours at room temperature after brewed.

JR Simplot Co. has broken ground on a new $80 million potato processing plant near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba in Canada. Construction is scheduled to be completed by August of 2003 on this plant that will process 300 million pounds of potatoes annually into french fries and other frozen potato products. Burlington, Wash.-based Fisher & Sons Inc. has been selected to provide engineering and construction management and Calgary, Alberta-based Stuart Olson Construction will construct the 200,000-sq.-ft. production building.
