Food Engineering honors the most innovative new food or beverage plant built in North America each year. The automation strategy, processing and packaging line design, and supply chain management plan of each plant project submitted are reviewed.
Food Engineering’s 2017 Plant of the Year Award goes to Abbott’s expansion at its nutrition facility in Tipp City, Ohio. The 250,000 sq. ft. plant first opened in 2014 at a cost of $270 million on 81 acres of land to produce three adult nutrition brands. In April 2016, a second filling line was added making the plant fully operational for the first time. Among the many cutting-edge features, the facility houses Abbott’s fastest aseptic fillers in the world, producing 800 bottles per minute.
