As FDA continues to strengthen its oversight of food ingredients, this month the agency released a final rule for the criteria needed to conclude an ingredient is “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) for use in human or animal food.
Unlike food additives, GRAS substances are not subject to FDA pre-market approval; however, they must meet the same safety standards as approved food additives.
