StarKist Co., with the first brand to introduce single-serve pouch seafood products, is the newest member to the council, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year.

“The addition of StarKist brings another organization operating at the forefront of seafood innovation into the NFI Salmon Council,” says Brandon F. Phillips, the senior director of communications and advocacy for NFI. “Salmon is…one of the best sources of DHA and EPA Omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamin D.  StarKist’s creative salmon products make it easier for more audiences to benefit from salmon.”

With overall U.S. salmon consumption trending upward the last few years, the council aims to set the standard for salmon marketing, expertise and leadership, in conjunction with the recommendations prescribed in the federal Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

The NFI Salmon Council and its members also are committed to sustainable management of the oceans and to being stewards of the environment, through the institute’s embrace of the United Nations’ Principles for Responsible Fisheries.

“We are geared toward growing our members’ relationships with existing salmon lovers and developing new connections for them with consumers who have yet to enjoy all the benefits salmon has to offer,” says Phillips.
