Safeway surpasses cage-free egg sales goal

Grocery retailer Safeway has exceeded its 2010 goal of increasing cage-free egg sales from 6 to 12 percent, with sales of cage-free eggs currently surpassing 15 percent. The initiative complements the firm’s 2008 policy of requiring private label brands Lucerne and O Organics to source eggs from Certified Humane farms. “Safeway’s commitment has been unique and impressive,” said Adele Douglass, founder and CEO of Humane Farm Animal Care, the nonprofit that developed and administers the Certified Humane labeling program. “As a result, Safeway and its suppliers have had a major impact on improving the humane treatment of laying hens in the US”
