FSMA Compliance: Updated cGMPs for Equipment Design
The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law in 2011. FSMA updated Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP’s). Regardless of compliance requirements for other parts of FSMA, all food and beverage factories are required to meet cGMP’s. Read strictly, the FDA now has the authority to issue a mandatory recall due to unsanitary machine design, not even if the product is actually contaminated. The implications of this are broad and may require significant upgrades or modifications to equipment in thousands of factories. While many more considerations should be made for equipment design, the presentation is an overview of the updated cGMP’s for Title 21 CFR part 117.40 and some considerations of component selection for compliance.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the actual text of the law for updated cGMP’s for Equipment Design
- Examples of how and what the law is saying
- Understand how simple component selection choices can impact cGMP compliance
