A new Zogby poll found that 77 percent of respondents said they would refuse to eat genetically modified salmon if given a choice and 73 percent saying FDA should require independent safety testing of genetically modified salmon. Only 19 percent thought FDA should approve the salmon, while 71 percent did not. Genetically modified salmon is not currently sold to consumers, but FDA is accepting public comment on the possibility. Fish company Aquabounty has sought permission to sell its genetically modified salmon, which grow faster than conventional fish. The company also plans to develop genetically modified trout and tilapia.
