Tyson Foods to Close Two Beef Facilities
Tyson Foods announced plans to close a beef processing facility in Joslin, Illinois and a case-ready facility in Eagle Mountain, Utah as part of an initiative to restructure its beef operations.
Tyson will anchor its beef business around three facilities in the central U.S.: Dakota City, Nebraska; Holcomb, Kansas; and Amarillo, Texas. Capacity from the Illinois and Utah locations will be moved to other facilities, and a second shift will begin at the Amarillo facility as cattle become available.
Tyson also plans to sell its beef facility in Pasco, Washington.
The company says these moves will create a more competitive footprint amid a historic cattle shortage. Pointing to recent USDA cattle inventory data, which included continued evidence of limited heifer retention, Tyson says these supply constraints are likely to persist.
As of Aug. 14, WARN notices from Tyson were not available on the Illinois and Nebraska websites. Tyson says it recognizes the impact these decisions have on team members and communities, adding it is committed to supporting its team members through this transition, including helping them apply for open positions at other facilities.
These closures follow the November 2025 announcement that Tyson would close a beef processing facility in Lexington, Nebraska, affecting more than 3,200 employees.
In its third-quarter results, Tyson says the USDA projects domestic production will decrease approximately 3% in fiscal 2026, compared to fiscal 2025. It anticipate segment operating loss, as adjusted, of $500 million to $600 million in fiscal 2026.
