Ocean Spray appointed Christina Khoo, Ph.D., as manager of research sciences. Dr Khoo, formerly principal scientist at Ocean Spray, will drive research into the health benefits of the cranberry.
General Mills will sell a portion of its Bakeries & Foodservice frozen dough business to Pennant Foods, a member of the Fresh Start Bakeries Family of Companies. The sale includes four plants located in Bakersfield, CA; Hazleton, PA; Montréal, QC and Vinita, OK.
NSF International presented its Food Safety Leadership Awards (FSLA) to recipients at the 2009 Food Safety Summit on April 27, 2009. The following received awards: Phillip Minerich, Ph.D., Hormel Foods Corp., Lifetime Achievement Award in Packaging and Distribution; Carl Winter, Department of Food Science and Technology, University of California, Award in Education and Training; The Coca-Cola Co., Award for Systems Improvement, Water; Greenville County Schools Food and Nutrition Services, Greenville County Schools (SC), Award for Systems Improvement, Community; Joseph Reardon, North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Award for Systems Improvement; and Steve Robinson, Dole Fresh Vegetables, Award for Systems Improvement.
The National Center for Food Safety and Technology, Illinois Institute of Technology, presented its 2009 NCFST Food Safety Award to Paul A. Hall, Ph.D., president and COO of AIV Microbiology & Food Safety Consultants LLC. Mary Deborah Meiners, who previously worked at Unilever and passed away unexpectedly on February 7, was awarded posthumously the 2009 Director’s Award.
