A new study from Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment found that ingesting small levels of PVC plastic softener DEHP does not present a health risk. However, about one percent of consumers are estimated to consume enough foods high in DEHP to exceed safe limits. The European Union classified DEHP as a reproductive toxicant and its use will be restricted after 2015. Fatty condiments such as mayonnaise and oily convenience products have shown higher DEHP values compared to unpacked and unprocessed foods, but the chemical is found in meat, cereals, dairy products and vegetables as well.
