USDA announces new Smart Snacks in Schools nutrition standards
The new standards must be implemented by July 1, 2014.

USDA will publish new nutrition standards for schools as part of its obligation under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The “Smart Snacks in Schools” standards will be published in this week’s federal register, and guidelines include more whole grain, low fat dairy, fruits, vegetables and leaner protein. The standards allow for variation by group for such factors as portion size and caffeine content. Implementation is not required until July 1, 2014. For more information, visit USDA’s website.
