Nestlé Waters North America will use 25 percent recycled plastic for packaging in U.S. products by 2021, trying to increase its role in addressing the country’s recycling challenges.

Starbucks and WestRock completed a pilot to recycle fiber from 25 million coffee cups for new cups.

Recycled paper company Sustana invested in pulping equipment to remove polyethylene liners from the cups and save the fiber, which was mixed into paperboard at WestRock’s mill in Evadale, Texas. Large rolls went to Seda packaging company for printing, cutting and forming.

For decades, manufacturers have struggled with the integration of Traditional Machine Vision. Visual Quality Assurance (QA), gating and sorting has always been the necessary evil, helping manufacturers reduce the risk of defective products. The process begins with the manufacturer identifying a need for QA and assessing whether a certain point on the production line is worth the time, effort and cost of implementing a machine vision solution.

With many foodservice operations—including quick-serve restaurants (QSRs) and delis—tightening costs by discontinuing in-store meat slicing, often processors must assume that function. In response, Berks Packing Company, a family owned Reading, Pennsylvania based meat processor, took steps to expand its slicing and interleaving capabilities.

The Kellogg Company is expanding its global sustainability commitments to include a goal of working towards total (100 percent) reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by the end of 2025.
