How Conagra Brands Advances Plant-Level Sustainability
In addition to varied initiatives, Conagra Brands encourages developing plant-level sustainable practices with the annual Sustainable Development Awards.
For Conagra Brands, a multifaceted sustainability approach isn’t only about reducing waste and protecting natural resources in the communities in which they operate – it’s also an important part of the company’s business strategy, says Christine Daugherty, vice president and chief sustainability officer.
"Sustainability is just part of making sure businesses are there for the long term," Daugherty says. "They're doing right by the environment, by the communities that they work in and it's right as a business proposition. Combining sustainability and business is really how I think about things, and that's what makes this job really exciting."
In addition to initiatives around water management, packaging and carbon reduction, Conagra Brands also hosts the Sustainable Development Awards, which recognize innovative, plant-level efforts to operate more sustainably.
Daugherty says the efforts and projects that the awards celebrate often turn into learnings for other facilities across Conagra Brands’ network.
"We want to make sure that all of this stuff is transparent (and) it's conveyed across the organization," Daugherty says. "Sustainability is non-competitive, even internally. That's the beauty — we just try to get that information as far and wide as we can. You know the analogy ‘the tide rises all boats’ -- this is truly an example of where it does within operations."
