For five generations, fruit waste had been a challenge for the Seaside Farm family, tomato growers on Saint Helena Island, S.C. Until a couple of years ago, the family paid contractors to dispose of the 2 million pounds of tomatoes that wouldn’t last the trip to market.

Dole Foods has opened a new state-of-the-art frozen fruit facility in McDonough, Georgia, Dole's third frozen fruit facility in the United States, complimenting the existing operations in Atwater, California, and Decatur, Michigan. The new facility is approximately 60,000 square feet, fully automated and will have four manufacturing lines which when at capacity can produce 60 million pounds of frozen fruit annually. The operations will package frozen fruit for Dole's retail, food service and private label customers on the east coast.

Lancaster Foods LLC has temporarily halted production of its processed butternut squash items. This break in production follows a voluntary product recall of items because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes.

Meijer recalled whole cantaloupes and some cut fruit containers for possible salmonella, found in a sampling investigation by agriculture authorities.

Peaches recalled across the U.S. for potential salmonella contamination went to 14 other countries.

Peaches sold in plastic bags at Aldi likely made about 70 people sick from salmonella, an outbreak spanning nine states, the FDA says.
