A June 10, 2011 report on Deutsche Welle states “bean sprouts are the likely source of an E. coli outbreak in Germany that has killed 31 people and made nearly 3,000 ill since May [2011].” This information was attributed to Reinhard Burger, president of Germany’s federal infectious disease laboratory, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). 

Approximately 181,620 pounds of ready-to-eat salads and sandwich wrap products are included in the recall.

The Food Marketing Institute (FMI) has taken issue with a survey released by an advocacy group that purported to find half the chicken products marketed by national brands and sold in supermarkets to be contaminated with feces.

Under a new USDA policy, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) will launch traceback investigations earlier when the Agency finds E. coli O157:H7 through its routine sampling program.
